Our favourite local independent coffee spots

As we’re sure you’re well aware of by now… we’re a bunch of coffee lovers here at Espresso Mushroom Co. So much so that we use the stuff to grow our DIY mushroom grow at home kits with. The last few months, actually, almost a year, has been tough on us all but our beloved baristas have been keeping the nation plodding along, one cup at a time.

But it’s not been easy for our independent coffee houses either, many unfortunately have had to shut up shop. So, to say thank you and hopefully offer a helping hand, we’re giving a shout out to some of our favourite independent local coffee shop and suppliers, in and around Newcastle that you can still sample on-the-go during lockdown.

Flat Caps Coffee

In normal times, a great pre-shopping spree spot to grab a brew, bite to eat and have a catch up down on Carliol Square in Newcastle City Centre. If you’re a Flat Caps fan and have been craving a cup, you’re in luck! They’re open daily for take-away drinks from 9am – 2.30pm. They’ve even got a range of their very own bagged coffee beans for you to brew at home. We’ve got a ‘latte’ love for Flat Caps.

North Shore Coffee

North Shore have been keeping us stocked up on our caffeine fill throughout the lockdown from their fleet of coffee brewing trucks. You can find them parked up daily at Moorfield right by Little Moor in Jesmond (8am-4pm Mon-Fri and 9am-4pm on weekends). The perfect stop for a tasty treat on your daily Bo-Jo permitted exercise walk. Their trucks and stalls can also be found at the Quayside Market and Cowells Garden Centre when they reopen post lockdown. As well as an excellent brew you can choose from a selection of delicious baked goods, our personal fav is a cruffin – a croissant, muffin hybrid.

Harvest, brought to you by another local roaster – Ouseburn Coffee Co. is a great little spot out in the leafy suburb of Jesmond. They’re keeping us going with a take-away menu every day throughout lockdown 8am-4pm, St. Georges Terrace. And if you love what you sample you can buy their beans to brew at home. You can also find these guys in the Fenwick Food Hall and Quayside and Tynemouth Markets.
